Sanath Jayasuriya

In the group match against India in the 1996 World Cup, Sri Lanka were set 272 runs to win off 50 overs. Indian champion Sachin Tendulkar had made 137 for the home team.

Sri Lanka were fearless in reply. Off the first 3 overs, Jayasuriya and Kaluwitharana laid an incredible platform for their team, and were 0/42 off 3 overs. Manoj Prabhakar coming in for some punishment, with 33 coming off his first 2 overs.

Jayasuriya slowed down a bit after that, but still managed 79 off 76, top scoring for his team and leading them to a 6 wicket win.
